The trip down through Spain en route to Morocco - 29 Jan 2019 11:02

After a very relaxing 24 hour crossing with Brittany Ferries we arrived rested at Santander. We knew the trip south was about 10 hours so decided to break it up by heading to a camp site some of the way down, but aiming to get there before it got dark – the joy of camping by head torch, not. With no real sense of Spanish trafic volumes and somewhere at the back of my mind a memory of something I read telling me to avoid Madrid we took a westerly route rather than due south. Given the traffic we encountered, as close to zero as makes no difference, perhaps i was dreaming and its Paris that one must avoid. We headed to just outside Palencia, a little run down and right on the main road but in the perfect geographical location. The traffic volume and noise can be heard into the night, that’s just the reality of camping near a motorway.

And so to Gibraltar

We were up and away by 7.30am and passed Valladolid, Salamanca and Plasencia before stopping for lunch at Cáceres. This is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site with a historic old town and town walls. Then on past Mérida, Zafra and Sevilla before arriving at Gibraltar. Well almost. We can see the rock but decided to stay in Spain at La Linea overnight before heading to Morocco in the morning – sureuropa. What a lovely campsite just on the beach, no traffic just the noise of the sea to put us to sleep. Sunny and 28 degrees yesterday. The Defender is turning heads everywhere we go, Geri thinks they are looking at her….shhhhhh. - Comments: 0

One And Only Review – Cape Town, South Africa - 21 May 2018 12:26

The One and Only – 5-star hotel was our first stop in Cape Town. I have to say it is definitely the right place to start your vacation if you are searching for a luxurious hotel with a breathtaking panoramic view of Table Mountain and the option of several dining areas.

The Hotel boasts a sleek modern design. Comprising of 91 rooms and suites in the main hotel plus 40 island suites; talk about 5-star. Outdoors you can expect to find an infinity pool with sunbeds and cabanas providing the perfect atmosphere for relaxing; complimented by the Spa and Gym, for those who want to treat themselves that extra bit.

The Gym is very spacious, well equipped with quality machinery and weights. For all fitness lovers, be sure to find everything that you need here.

The Hotels Spa was beautifully tranquil and offered a wide variety of body treatments, massages, and facials. After you have relished in the SPA service of your choice you may enter the private relaxation room where you can drift away into the mellow atmosphere. Be sure to make use of the Jacuzzi & sauna facilities as well.

Upon entering our couple bed suite, we found a flawlessly clean room with a generously sized bed which had adorable shaped chocolates on the pillows for us. The beds themselves were as though sleeping on a cloud they were so comfortable and it is obvious that your comfort is their priority as even the pillows were great.

Even though the room was impressive at first glance, the bathroom is where the suite really got me. Large with a minimalistic, oval bathtub and a separate shower. The hotel and designers spared no expense as in addition to the large room is also a big terrace with a stunning view of Table Mountain.

Breakfast at Reuben’s is outstanding with a fantastic choice of fresh squeezed juices and even includes oysters (it seems to be very popular thing to include the Five star hotels of Cape Town!) Fresh gluten free bread and a la carte menu with a wide array of choices, whilst maintaining a very high standard in both quality and service. What I would do to eat here every morning!

The One and Only Hotel offers one of the most extensive High Tea times as there is a staggering selection of tea & coffee accompanied by an excellent sweet section of mini macaroons, scones, cupcakes, baked cheese, one of the best cheesecakes I have ever tried and so much more. Everything was delicious, and they did not slack when it came to presentation. The High Tea is from 14:30 to 17:30 but you are welcome to continue sitting there for a bit longer.
In my opinion, the One & Only serves one of the best High Tea’s in Cape Town, typically costing about R295.

The Japanese cuisine Nobu restaurant was marvellous and one would describe as a great experience. I highly recommend a visit for all you oriental food lovers. Something I thought to make them stand out was their creative and unique sashimi dishes.

We enjoyed the Reuben’s (breakfast restaurant) so much we returned for dinner and it certainly did not fail to maintain its high standard of food. I found the pricing to be very fair for what you are getting as well.

Great Location – Very central for those wishing to explore the food markets, V&A Waterfront and not too far from Green Point (where the 2010 Football World Cup stadium stands) and Sea Point (a higher end community with plenty of activities along the coast). Very safe to walk and explore around this side of town as there are public guards patrolling the areas regularly. Good for couples, friends, families, or even business travellers.

Ask for a mountain view; as you will benefit from having the option to enjoy a beautiful sunrise from the balcony. - Comments: 0
